A Walk With Kendall
There's no hesitation when I text my niece, Kendall, to see if she is up for a walk with me to scout out a location for an upcoming family session. She's always game to model for me, and her beautiful smile makes my day.
She turned 30 this year, although I have a hard time believing she is more than 18. Her youthful exuberance for life, and her love of the outdoors keeps her going. She's been through four treatments for cancer so far and there's a few more left. But it's not stopping her for long. This year she's completed 48 hikes. She says today doesn't count because we weren't really hiking.
Without any prompting, she removes her toque for me to create an image without it. Beautiful! But she puts it back on because it's a little chilly without hair!
Cottonwood Island Park is another favourite spot for both of us, so when we stopped to watch the chickadees flitting around in the bushes, I asked her to put some of the birdseed we found in the palm of her hand and just wait. It didn't take long for them to approach her. Such a thrill! And before we finished our stroll, Kendall spotted something small and white in the marshy area off the path. It was a weasel of some kind. It wasn't until we got home and did some research did we find out it was a stoat, which is a short-tailed weasel. Neither of us had ever seen one before. So cool!
