2023 PPOC National Image Salon Results
The Professional Photographers of Canada's National Image Competition took place in February. The judges gave their verdict and I am happy to announce that three of my images have been accepted into the salon, two of them scoring Merit, and one Accepted. When judging, the scores can be Not Accepted, Accepted, Merit and Excellence.
"A MILLION STARS UP ABOVE"
This image scored Accepted into the 2023 National Image Salon. This is captured in one of my favourite locations when I go out to photograph the Aurora Borealis.
The naked eye cannot see the beautiful colours of the aurora at night because of our limited night vision. I rely on my camera to capture all the colours by using the tools available to me in the camera. A long exposure setting allows the light to hit the sensor to capture the detail, whereas the rods of our eyes which we use at night are not as sensitive and see more black and white. Here's a really great explanation on YouTube if you're interested in learning.

"PREDATOR AND PROTECTOR"
This image received a Merit score into the 2023 PPOC National Image Salon.
June 17th, 2022 I took a trip of a lifetime to photograph grizzlies in Knight Inlet on the coast of British Columbia. It was a gloriously sunny day for these massive animals to wander the shoreline in search of food. The title sums up what I see these magnificiant animals as being, both a predator and a protector. Male grizzlies will kill a cub if it gets the chance and the female will protect her cub at all costs.
"BACKBONE OF NIGHT"
This image scored Merit in the Pictorial/Floral class in the 2022 PPOC-BC Regional Image Salon and also in the 2023 PPOC National Image Salon. It is my first Milky Way image to be entered into competition.
This is a panoramic image created with two images and captured on a warm August night just north of Prince George.
After thinking about a good title for this image, I settled on "Backbone of Night" which lead me to a search on the Milky Way. Did you know that in China they call it the “Silver River,” and in the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa, it's called the “Backbone of Night”? I guess not only in South Africa does something this cosmic remind a tiny human such as I to think the same thing when looking up at the sky.
