5 Ways to Look More Relaxed in Your Headshot Photo
5 Ways to Look More Relaxed in Your Headshot Photo
Maybe it's your first time, or maybe your 21st time, you need to get an updated photo of yourself for work, social media, resume, or for your mom. (She'd always appreciate a photo of you!)
But you are dreading it for reasons only you can know. Perhaps it's because you think you don't look good in photos. Well, that may be because of bad lighting, or you weren't prepared for the snapshot taken by your best friend, or a multitude of other reasons.
A professional photographer is trained to overcome those minor mind blocks and help you get an amazing photo! So let me do my magic!
When you’re relaxed before and during a headshot session, it’s easier for your personality and professionalism to shine through.
Here are a few things for you to try to make your upcoming headshot session a great time.
- Relax before your photoshoot. Whether you want to run a bath or put on your favourite playlist, do something before your headshot session that will put you in the right headspace. Ask your photographer if you can bring your playlist along with you to help you relax when you get there.
- Get to know your photographer. You should already have an idea of what your photographer is like prior to your session. If you have time, browse their blog when you are on their website. You might find common likes. It can also help to ask him or her a few questions before your session begins to help you feel even more comfortable with them.
- Don’t freeze, breathe! To tell your story when in front of the camera, breathe, don't freeze in one spot. Move your head and shoulders to try out different poses, or follow your photographer's prompts and directions. Each click of the button will capture a unique photo of you, and when you're in the groove, it will feel very natural. Holding your breath makes you look stiff and anxious, so channel that inner yogi and use your breath to find that relaxing feeling you want and your images will show it.
- Think about your character. Because you want your headshots to reflect your authentic character, using words that evoke the desired character trait, such as trust, it can help by thinking something like "I trust you" to mirror the feeling of a client trusting you.
- Dress accordingly. Your headshot session is not the time to try a new hairstyle or outfit. You want to look and feel good, but you want to be comfortable too. This will help you feel more confident and relaxed for your photos. When you are YOU, authenticity shines through.
