2023 PPOC Awards Gala
On Saturday April 22nd, 2023 in Canmore, AB the Professional Photographers of Canada held their Awards Gala during Canadian Imaging Convention and Expo. Although I earned and received my MPA (Master of Photoraphic Arts) 1st Bar in 2021 and my SPA (Service of Photographic Arts) designation in 2022, I was honoured to be recoognized in person at the first in-person national event since 2018.
What moved me most was not receiving the awards as much as how wonderful it felt to see and be with my peers in person. Zoom meetings and on-line webinars and video chats filled the space when the in-person meets could not happen. I am thankful for the technology that allowed this, but nothing beats the human touch. There were so many hugs happening over the weekend!
The image of four of us from BC - Manpreet Sokhi, me, Jamie Poh-Blair and Stefan Malloch - is a special one. These three fabulous photographers needed a mentor in their early years when they first joined, and I am so proud to have been able to fill that role for them as they each became Accredited Professional Photographers, Jamie and Stefan have earned their Craftsman of Photographic Arts. and Manpreet and Stefan have earned a place on the World Photographic Cup team!
It takes dedication and a lot of hard work to reach every one of these goals, and I thank the volunteers who help make this the organization it is, and one I am proud to be a member of.
The BC members who attended the Convention are pictured above. I have benefited from the help and guidance of many of them since joining in 2010, I have earned my CPA, MPA, and SPA, all by entering competitions, volunteering on the BC Board, and attending both Regional and National Conventions for the education and comraderie the association provides. If you are seeking a career as a professional photographer, I highly recommend you join PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada).
