On April 27, 2015 I was presented my Craftsman of Photographic Arts award at the Professional Photographers of Canada's Canadian Imaging Convention in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Beside me all the way on my journey to become the best photographer I can be is my husband, Rob. He accompanied me to the Awards banquet to share in my accomplishment, and it was such a thrill to be there among my family and peers. (Photo Credit: Sébastien Lavallée)
A Craftsman of Photographic Arts designation is achieved by accumulating a required number of image and service merits. PPOC members can earn merits in a variety of ways such as: image acceptance in the PPOC national image salon, accreditations, volunteering for the national association or its regions, attending photographic educational events, and by promoting professional photography. This designation is a trademark of PPOC and once earned a member in good standing can use the letters CPA after their name. Returning something to the profession, which provides their livelihood, is part of the responsibility of holders of the CPA title.
An Accredited member of PPOC is a specialist in his or her chosen field of photography.
The Accreditation process recognizes photographers who have reached a nationally accepted standard of proficiency and knowledge in photographic arts. An Accreditation is achieved by submitting ten images in a chosen category to a PPOC Board of Review. This peer-reviewed program challenges candidates to demonstrate their capability of delivering exceptional quality photography in a chosen category. In assessing Accreditation Submissions, the judges consider the following criteria: Impact, Creativity, Style, Composition, Presentation, Color Balance, Centre of Interest, Lighting, Subject Matter, Quality, Technique, and Story Telling.
Becoming an Accredited member of PPOC made me realize I am as talented as other professional photographers and it has made me more aware of what it takes to be a professional in this industry. In 2011, I entered National Salon and received an Accepted and Merit on two of my images, both Pictorial!
Friendship, camaraderie, and the incredible learning opportunities offered through accredited schools such as Image Explorations at Shawnigan Lake, PPOC's National Convention, as well as the chance to earn a designation in my field are some of the benefits I have experienced by becoming a member of PPOC. Having my work judged and accepted by my peers gives me the confidence to say "This is what I do and I am worth it!"
